Google has laid off 12,000 employees due to the current economic situation. The Mountain View giant plans to redirect priorities to, among other things, the development of artificial intelligence.
About 12,000 people from around the world working for the Alphabet group (which includes Google) have been laid off. This number represents 6% of all those previously employed by the tech giant. Some have already received individual emails informing them of the decision (excluding residents of countries that do not allow such a method of delivering a similar message). The employees will not be left with nothing, as they will be paid their salaries, bonuses for the past year and 6 months of health care, among other things.
Google slows down over global economic situation
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced on the company blog that the reason is the current global economic situation and future goals set for the company, such as the development of work on artificial intelligence. The layoffs are also related to reorganization within the corporation and adjusting to the current realities. S. Pichai confessed that he bears full responsibility for what happened.
“Over the past two years we have seen periods of dramatic growth. […] We hired people under different economic conditions […].
Pichai explains that the company has already gone through difficult economic cycles, and it is important at such moments to prioritize appropriately so that the products developed become better and better. Google is not the only corporation that has made job cuts recently. Similar actions have taken place at, among others, Meta Amazon and Microsoft.
