BioWare will lose the creator of one of the studio’s flagship series. Mac Walters, director of the Mass Effect series, announced his departure from the company this past weekend.

“With a new year comes new adventures.

As some of you already know, at the end of last year I decided to leave BioWare. These past 19 years have been a life-changing experience to say the least, and it made the choice to go very difficult. I’ve worked with so many wonderful people and had the privilege to be a part of the most amazing teams and projects. It’s hard to fathom it all, and I know I’ll be reflecting on it for years to come.

Thank you to everyone I’ve had the joy of working with, and I wish everyone at BioWare the very best in everything you do. It’s truly been a pleasure.”

As a confirmation of his words, the developer added a new tab on his profile under the “experience” tab, titled “Career break”.

Mac Walters started his career at BioWare as a scriptwriter for the studio’s emerging IP – Jade Empire. Shortly thereafter, he joined the team working on the first part of Mass Effect.

He then took on the position of lead screenwriter of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. Walters held leadership positions in the work on subsequent installments: Mass Effect Andromeda as well as Legendary Edition.

The last project he worked on before leaving was the fourth installment of Dragon Age, subtitled Dreadwolf. Walters was the game’s production manager.
